How natural color works
The color is a blend of henna and supportive herbs. You mix the powder with warm water to make a smooth paste. The paste coats the cuticle instead of forcing pigment into the cortex. That coating adds tone, shine, and a thicker feel. It is free of ammonia, PPD, and metallic salts. It will not lighten hair. After you rinse, the shade deepens for 24 to 48 hours as the plant dyes oxidize. Plan your wash schedule with that in mind.
How to choose your shade
Match your current level first. Then pick a tone: warm, neutral, or cool. If you want a soft grow-out, choose one step lighter than your target. If you want bolder definition, choose one step deeper. Always do a strand test. Mix a teaspoon, apply to a hidden section, time it, rinse with water only, and watch the color develop through the next day.

Undertone tips
Warm skin usually pairs best with Chestnut, Bronze, Ginger, and Sunshine. Neutral or cool skin often looks great in Chocolate, Mahogany, Midnight, and Wine. If you are unsure, mix neighbors. For example, blend Golden Light Brown with Chestnut Medium Brown to soften warmth, or mix Chocolate Dark Brown with Mahogany to add a little heat. Do a quick strand test to lock timing.
Gray coverage basics
Gray is smooth and can be resistant. Saturation and time are everything. Start at the roots. Work in small sections. Load more paste on stubborn areas like temples and crown. For medium shades, process 60 to 90 minutes. For darkest brown and black on high gray, use a two-step. First apply pure henna or a henna-forward red tone and process 60 to 90 minutes. Rinse with water. Then apply your dark blend, such as Mahogany or Midnight, and process 45 to 60 minutes. The Black 2-Step kit links above includes the dark finish needed for the deepest result. Color will deepen as it sets through the next day.
Preparations
Patch test 24 to 48 hours before each new shade. Mix a teaspoon, apply to the inner elbow for 45 minutes, rinse, and watch the skin through the next day. Clarify your hair before coloring to remove oils and styling buildup. Dry hair fully. Protect your hairline and ears with a thin layer of balm. Set out gloves, a non-metal bowl, a tint brush or bottle, clips for sectioning, and a cap.
Mixing and timing
Add warm distilled water to the powder and stir to a yogurt texture. If your shade includes henna, rest the paste 20 to 30 minutes for dye release. Section hair into four to six parts. Apply from root to tip with full saturation. Cover with a cap and keep warm. Process 60 to 120 minutes based on shade depth and gray percentage. Rinse with water only. Do not shampoo for 24 to 48 hours. This waiting period helps the shade reach full depth.
Aftercare
Once the set window passes, wash with a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser. Condition lightly. Limit hot tools for a day or two. If your water is hard, use distilled water for mixing and consider a chelating rinse on non-color days. Add a quick gloss between full applications if you want extra shine. A cassia-forward gloss or a teaspoon of your original shade mixed thin works well on mid-lengths and ends.
Routine ideas
Goal: soft grow-out on blonde. Choose Sunshine Light Blonde now. In four weeks, refresh the roots and add a light gloss to mid-lengths.
Goal: rich brunette with minimal upkeep. Start with Chocolate Dark Brown. In five weeks, do a root-only touch-up. Gloss ends every second cycle.
Goal: bold red that looks natural. Choose Ginger Natural Red. In three to four weeks, add a short Ginger gloss to refresh tone without going darker.
Goal: very dark on high gray. Follow the two-step. Keep your dark second step on hand for quick root refreshes at week three.
Troubleshooting
Color looks too light the next day. Wait through the 48-hour set period. If it is still light, extend processing by 15 minutes next time and check your prep.
Roots look translucent. Increase paste load on gray areas and keep the section size smaller.
Tone looks warmer than you planned. Blend in a neighbor with a neutral read, such as Chocolate Dark Brown.
Ends look dry. Wait until after the set window, then condition. Add a pea-size oil to mid-lengths only.
Safety reminders
Do not use products labeled “black henna.” Those often contain PPD. Always read the INCI on product pages. Keep the paste off the scalp if you have open cuts. If you have a history of allergies, consult your doctor first and do both patch and strand tests.
